Walk into any drugstore and the moisturizer aisle will have you convinced they're all basically the same thing. Body butter, body lotion, body cream…different names, different packaging, similar enough promises.
But if you have sensitive, dry, condition-prone skin, or simply dislike the feeling of lotion sitting on top of your skin (us too!). The difference between body butter vs body lotion is worth understanding before you buy.
Between the ingredients, how they’re formulated, what they’re good for, and how they feel on your skin, each has a place, and one (in our opinion) is better than the other.
Here’s the difference between body butter and body lotion and which is preferred for your skin:
What’s In Body Butter vs. Body Lotion:
Body lotion is a water-based emulsion. Water and oil blended together with emulsifiers to keep the formula stable. Because water is the base, lotion needs preservatives to prevent bacterial growth, which means a longer ingredient list by default.
Body butter skips the water and is built from plant butters — shea, kokum, mango, cocoa — blended with nourishing oils like avocado. No water means no preservatives needed, which means a shorter, cleaner ingredient list.
Now, having a water base isn’t inherently bad, but it does create a chain reaction when it comes to ingredients. Water introduces the need for preservatives, which often includes synthetic additives. For sensitive skin, it introduces more potential triggers for a reaction.
Body butter, however, has an ingredient list of maybe 4 or 5 ingredients, which makes it easier to know what you’re putting on your skin, why, and if it is causing a reaction on your skin, help narrow down the causes.
How Body Lotion vs. Body Butter Feels on Your Skin
Lotion is supposed to absorb fast, thanks to the water included, but often ends up sitting on top of your skin. And, even when it does absorb fast, your skin feels dry again two hours later. Any lightweight “feeling” or absorption comes with a trade-off: body lotion doesn’t seal in moisture the same way a butter does.
Body butter (using natural plant butters) often spreads on thicker, but creates a layer that seals in moisture by slowing transepidermal water loss (the process by which your skin naturally loses moisture throughout the day).
This is why we formulated our solid body butter sticks! They apply smooth (not sticky) and absorb into the skin, providing the moisture seal without leaving a thick layer on your skin. Explore our favorites here!
What’s Better for Who? Choosing Between Body Butter and Body Lotion
Lotion absolutely has its place. For example, if you have oily or combination skin and just need some skin hydration, lotion can do the job.
But for dry skin, sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, or anyone who wants moisture to last, body butter is the better choice. It’s also the better option for anyone who wants to minimize fragrance, preservatives, and synthetic additives.
And if you’re not a fan of how traditional body butters feel, there’s also whipped body butter and solid body butter which feel lighter on your skin without losing moisture retention.
So Which One Should You Use?
If you’re in a pinch and lotion is what’s available, it’s fine! But if you’re looking for something to truly care for your skin on a day-to-day basis, we highly recommend body butter, specifically solid body butter.
It’s easier to travel with, re-apply even when you’re busy, and doesn’t leave your skin feeling icky (or dry). Ready to grab yours?
